The Town of Hofsos in more detail...

Hofsos is the closest town to the Art Center...it's a small fishing village with a population of about 150+.  As one might expect, it's a quiet place, very peaceful. The town residents look out at two separate mountain ranges, one on each side (west/east).  The snow is receding from the mountains but still clings stubbornly in various spots. This first view looks to the east, the second to the west.

Hofsos also boasts an Emigration Center: a museum dedicated to the periods of movement of Icelanders to other countries in earlier centuries, specifically to Canada.  Interestingly, many of these Icelandic natives found it difficult to adjust to the extreme cold of the Canadian environment.  Iceland, for all of its snow, glacial activity, and long winters, is actually a bit warmer on average than Canada.

Hofsos also has a fairly new pool facility.  Kept warm by geothermal heat, the pool sits at the edge of a small cliff, overlooking the water. A you can imagine, it's a popular spot.

Otherwise, Hofsos could best be described as a sleepy little quiet town.  Clusters of homes, a small grocery store, and a tiny church:

Steinunn, director of the Art Center, drives into Hofsos twice weekly, and some of us have been tagging along to take advantage of the pool, or to get some simple items at the store.  However, anything needed from a hardware store, liquor store, pharmacy or larger grocery has to wait until the once weekly excursion into Saudarkrokur, a larger town about a 30 minute drive away.
